German New Government Promises Business Continuity With New AccentsThe leaders of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), the environmentalist Green Party and the business-friendly Free Democrats (FDP) have agreed a three-way coalition that will form the next German government and see the SPD’s Olaf Scholz replace Angela Merkel (CDU) as German chancellor.
The coalition agreement, which is entitled “Daring More Progress” and was presented to the public on November 24 in Berlin, follows intense negotiations after the German national election on September 26. The agreement aims to reinforce Germany’s leading economic role in the world and further incentivize climate protection and digitalization.
“More than anything, the new government offers stability and continuity. This is reflected in the fact Olaf Scholz will become Germany’s next chancellor.
says Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) CEO Robert Hermann.
“But, the presence of two new parties in the government will intensify some priorities.”
According to the coalition agreement, there will be an increase of EUR 50 billion annually in investment in education, climate protection and digitalization. The superministry is responsible for economic and environmental affairs. And it highlights environmental topics such as Germany’s transition to clean energy sources, an accelerated phase-out of coal as a power source, the promotion of hydrogen as a renewable energy carrier and increased support for electric mobility.
“The promise that the new German government will accelerate Germany’s efforts to achieve its climate protection goals is what this new German government holds,”
Thomas Grigoleit, GTAI Director Energy, Construction and Environmental Technologies, says:
We can expect that the government will make an effort to speed up the elimination of coal as an important energy source. A historical opportunity will present itself in terms of growing international markets for German cleantech companies. This can be achieved through the expansion of renewables, creation of an infrastructure and hydrogen economy, as well as the ongoing decarbonization and transportation logistics.
Digitalization is a priority under the coalition agreement. Digitalization is a priority for the new government. It has promised to build a digital state, and create new strategies regarding artificial intelligence and Blockchain technology. The state will increase its support of start-ups and new businesses, while the bureaucracy is being reduced to promote innovation. This coalition agreement maintains the principle that there should be a balanced federal budget, and does not allow for tax increases.
“The new government can give the digitalization industry a major boost,” says one business leader.
Marc Rohr, GTAI Director for the Digital and Service Sectors
We’re referring to 5G. This is the extensive extension of fiber optics networks to increase access to high-speed internet service. It also includes measures to reduce the cost of electricity through digitalization and new incentives and financing programs to support highly sustainable and innovative digital business models.
The government-in-spe’s newly formulated priorities offer plenty of business opportunities for international companies that set up shop in Europe’s largest market.
“Parties that will govern Germany under the new coalition agreement have pledged to continue building on Germany’s strengths and making improvements in those areas Germany should do better.”
Robert Hermann.
The roadmap shows where Germany will go. It’s a great time to be able to export to Germany your business and contribute to the future of Germany.
For ratification, the entire coalition agreement will now be sent to all three party leaders. On or near December 6, the new government led by Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, is likely to be in power.
