Britain claimed Friday that a new coronavirus variant was spreading in South Africa. Scientists consider it to be the most serious and therefore needed to establish whether vaccines were ineffective.
Grant Shapps Transport Secretary stated that South Africa’s COVID case taught that action is essential.
UK Health Security Agency stated that this variant, called B.1.1.529, contained a spike protein which was significantly different to that found in COVID-19 vaccines.
Shapps said that this is “the most important variant (as scientists) have encountered to date in research,” Sky News reported.
The government was advised by officials to take immediate action to prevent any potential problems. However, it may take several weeks for all information about the variant to be available.
This variant was also found in Botswana, Hong Kong and elsewhere. However, the UK Health Security Agency stated that it had not been confirmed in Britain.
