REUTERS/Hannibal Hanschke/File PhotoKUALA LUMPUR, (Reuters) – Malaysia will accuse Dyson supplier ATA IMS Bhd of causing the death penalty, a minister stated. This was after the Labour Department received complaints against Dyson, he said. The allegations were made following forced labor claims.
Reuters reported last week that Dyson had told Reuters it was ending ties to ATA after an audit by ATA of Malaysian labour practices. The whistleblower also made allegations about Dyson.
ATA makes 80% of its income from this home appliance manufacturer. It reiterated this week that it was taking the allegations seriously. It denied previously the allegations of forced labour.
Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan told parliament the ministry, through the labour department, had taken action and opened investigation papers into ATA previously after receiving complaints.
“We had given them a compound notice but it has yet to be paid, therefore we will charge them in court,” Saravanan said in parliament on Tuesday.
Saravanan failed to specify what charges had been brought against him or the number of complaints he received.
Reuters asked the ministry for clarifications on its charges and allegations but they did not respond immediately.
ATA (which makes Dyson vacuum cleaners and purifiers) did not immediately respond to our request for comment.
Saravanan claimed last week that Malaysia was conducting an investigation into Dyson’s decision to cancel the ATA contract.
ATA’s shares fell nearly two-thirds following the Dyson announcement.
