BENGALURU, Reuters – Uber Technologies (NYSE 🙂 Ltd announced on Thursday that it will roll out a feature which allows Indian riders to book ride via WhatsApp.

Uber could tap into India’s more than 500million users of Meta Platforms owned WhatsApp.

“Starting this week, we are rolling out a new service that gives people the option to book an Uber ride via an official Uber WhatsApp chatbot,” Uber said https://ubr.to/31e9mC7 in a blog post.

Uber operates in this Asian country since 2008 and now has 70 locations.

Uber will be available to all riders without the need for them to install or use it. Uber also said everything, including user registration, booking a ride and getting receipts, will be handled through WhatsApp’s chat interface.

WhatsApp users may book rides by either texting to Uber, scanning a barcode or clicking on a link to launch an Uber WhatsApp chat.

The company stated that riders will receive the same insurance protections and safety features as people who use the Uber app to book rides directly. WhatsApp will provide information to the rider about safety and how to reach Uber for an emergency.

The initial launch will be in Lucknow (the capital city of India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh), and it will then expand to other areas by the end of next year.

Uber announced that Uber will offer the service in English. Uber also stated that Indian languages would soon be added to their platform.
