TOKYO/WASHINGTON – Fears regarding the Omicron virus of coronavirus grew on Thursday, after the first report was made in the United States. On Thursday, the Japanese central banking warned about economic trouble as other countries tighten their containment.
The first known U.S. case https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/us-reports-first-case-omicron-variant-2021-12-01 was a fully vaccinated person in California who returned to the United States from South Africa on Nov. 22 and tested positive seven days later.
President Joe Biden is working on the U.S. strategy for fighting COVID-19 this winter and sources briefed on the matter told Reuters one step will be extending requirements https://www.reuters.com/world/us/exclusive-us-extend-transit-mask-mandate-through-mid-march-sources-2021-12-01 for travelers to wear masks through mid-March. Sources said that a formal announcement was expected to be made on Thursday.
International visitors will also be subject to stricter rules of testing, according to the White House.
Airlines in the United States were told https://www.reuters.com/world/us/exclusive-us-orders-airlines-disclose-passengers-who-have-been-southern-africa-2021-12-01 to hand over the names of passengers arriving from parts of southern Africa hit by Omicron, according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention letter seen by Reuters.
Many details remain unknown regarding the variant that was found in South Africa’s Nov. 8th, and which has since spread to at least two-dozen countries.
Anthony Fauci, top U.S. infectious Disease expert, said Wednesday it might take at least two weeks to understand how quickly the variant spreads, what the severity is of the disease and whether there are any vaccines that can prevent it from spreading.
South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said early epidemiological data suggested https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/safrica-festival-halted-after-36-test-positive-covid-site-2021-12-01 Omicron was able to evade some immunity, but existing vaccines should still protect against severe disease and death.
Maria van Kerkhove (WHO epidemiologist) stated in a briefing, that Omicron should have data “within days” regarding contagiousness.
BioNTech’s CEO claimed that it has developed a vaccine with BioNTech as part of a strategic partnership Pfizer (NYSE) could offer protection against Omicron’s severe illness.
Early indications suggesting Omicron may be markedly more contagious than previous variants have rattled financial markets https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/wall-st-turns-red-omicron-reaches-united-states-2021-12-01, fearful that new restrictions could choke off a tentative recovery from the economic ravages of the pandemic.
After Wall Street’s big averages dropped more than 1% Wednesday, key sharemarket indexes in Japan or Australia fell in morning trading on Thursday. Investors reacted to U.S. cases and growing concerns about inflation. [MKTS/GLOB]
Hitoshi Suzuki, a member of Bank of Japan’s board of directors, said that Japan may not be able to meet its expectations in the event of Omicron spreading or supply disruptions.
Suzuki explained that “if the supply constraint’s impact is greater or lasts longer, there may be a risk that economic growth might further underestimate expectations.” Next year.
The Philippines central bank governor adopted a positive tone.
“We’re not concerned about… this new variant. “I think that there is too much exaggeration about the impact of it,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno stated at a press conference.
TOUR RESTRICTIONS
The WHO reported that 56 countries have implemented Omicron-safe travel measures as of Nov. 28.
South Korea’s latest restriction was to stop quarantine exemptions from inbound travelers who are fully vaccinated for two weeks. The decision came after daily coronavirus infection rates rose to an all-time high. South Korea has confirmed the first five Omicron variant cases on Wednesday.
To prevent the Omicron variant from reaching Southeast Asia’s most populous country, Indonesia has also increased border restrictions and placed quarantine.
Nearly all foreigners from the United States have been barred since they were in any of these eight countries.
As the European Union president stated that there is a race against time to prevent the release of the vaccine for children aged 5-11 years, the European Union pushed back the rollout of their vaccines.
Ursula von der Leyen (president of the European Commission) said at a press conference, “Prepare to the worst and hope for the best.”
Both the United States of America and Britain have increased their booster programmes to deal with the emerging variant. The WHO however recommends that rich countries instead give more vaccines to vulnerable populations in less developed countries, where they are more likely to develop variants.
