MANILA (Reuters – Ferdinand Marcos Jr., an early frontrunner in the Philippines presidential race, received a formal complaint Thursday. Longtime enemies of Marcos’ powerful family are urging authorities to remove him from the elections in 2012.

A flurry of complaints has been filed to Marcos by the activists as part of his campaign to get rid of him, who is a career politician. He also happens to be the son of the dictator and named after him.

It was one of six that were filed with the election authorities. This case centers around his 1995 conviction for failure to pay income taxes or to file tax returns during public office.

The 13-page petition stated that “He was the child of the ruling dictator,” which is the exact same dictator who placed the penalty of permanent disqualification.”

This group was speaking about a 1985 amendment in the Internal Revenue Code that permanently bars public officers convicted of tax crimes from voting or running for office.

According to the petition, “Perhaps that he thought he could be an exception from his father’s decrees.”

Perhaps the most well-known and controversial family in the Philippines is that of Marcos.

Although it fell from grace, the company has kept vast wealth and strong connections. But its presence has been an irritant to many who experienced the cruel 1970s martial law regime under the old Marcos.

BBM is his nickname, “Bongbong Marcos”. His media team did not immediately reply to my request for comment.
