It could be used to provide preliminary information on the high transmissibility Omicron variant of coronavirus, which is more contagious than the Delta variant.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control stated in a statement that Omicron has been identified as the cause of more than half the SARS-CoV-2 cases in Europe/EEA based on ECDC’s mathematical modeling.
Although there isn’t any conclusive evidence regarding Omicron’s transmissibility, Maria van Kerkhove (World Health Organization) stated on Wednesday that the agency expects to have information on it within days.
Europe has only seen a handful of Omicron-related infections. This variant was discovered in Southern Africa, last month.
European Union (EEA), also known as the European Economic Area, includes 27 EU member countries plus Iceland and Liechtenstein.
On Thursday morning, Jean Francois Delfraissy, top French scientist adviser, stated that Omicron might replace Delta by January end.
