Five cases have been confirmed in New York by the governor of Covid-19. Kathy Hochul spoke out late Thursday night, just hours after the discovery of Covid-19 variants in Minnesota-Colorado.
At a press conference, she stated that there were three new cases in Suffolk County. Two in Queens, one Brooklyn and one New York City. Minnesota Health Authorities confirmed that the second case in the United States of the Omicron Covid variant was found earlier this week, and it was a New York City resident.
Dr. Mary Bassett of the New York State Health Department stated that an Omicron case would be confirmed in New York within the next few hours. We now have evidence of exposure. “We fully anticipate that it will become visible in the days ahead,” she stated.
David Chokshi (New York City Health Commissioner) stated that the Minnesota Omicron case that was discovered in an individual who fell ill after attending a Javits Center conference, was likely not an isolated incident.
California was the site of this week’s first U.S. confirmation of the strain that has been heavily mutated.
The U.S. health authorities and others around the globe are concerned about the possibility that Omicron may be more spreadable and might not receive the vaccines currently in place. This variant contains more than 50 mutations. More than 30 are located on the spike protein, which the virus attaches directly to human cells.
“The molecular profiles of all the mutations you have observed [in omicron]”It might make it more transmissible, and it may evade some of the vaccine protections,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, White House chief medical adviser, told reporters Wednesday. We don’t yet know the answer.
The Biden administration announced Thursday a plan to fight omicron, as well as possible winter surges of the dominant delta strain of the virus. All international travellers arriving in the United States will be required to have their Covid test done within 24 hours. Through March 18, the administration will increase mask requirements for domestic and public transport flights. The administration is expanding the availability of free Covid testing at home.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Wednesday that the presence of omicron in 23 different countries has been verified. It was discovered in Botswana, and the WHO received it from South Africa’s public health personnel.
Maria Van Kerkhove (the WHO’s technical leader) stated Wednesday that South Africa is experiencing an increase in hospitalizations. However, more data are needed to determine if omicron can cause more severe diseases.
Governor. The California patient who was positive for Omicron in California had been fully immunized, and has only mild symptoms. Gavin Newsom confirmed the news on Wednesday. Because they weren’t six months away from the original vaccine course, this person aged 18 to 49 had not been given a booster.
California’s Health and Human Services Secretary, Dr. Mark Ghaly said that mild symptoms and improvement in the patient are signs of the importance vaccines.
Moderna’s CEO and Pfizer chief executive officer, Moderna, said it would take them about two weeks to collect enough data for determination of how omicron-related mutations affect the effectiveness of current vaccines. The CEOs of Pfizer and Moderna said that it could take until 2022 to create a shot specifically targeting this variant. Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel stated that the company could release a booster shot with a much higher dose sooner.
