REUTERS/Stringer/File PhotoBEIJING/SYDNEY – China’s aviation regulator has stated that there are still a lot of tests to complete for narrowbody C919 home-built aircrafts to be certified. It raises questions about COMAC’s goal to meet its year-end deadline.
The C919 is China’s effort to compete with Airbus SE (OTC) and Boeing (NYSE) Co. However, it has only passed 34 of 276 required certification tests, Yang Zhenmei of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) told reporters.
According to three sources familiar with the program, COMAC reported in September that it was finding it difficult to reach certification and production targets of C919 under tough U.S. export laws.
China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd, NYSE:) Corp Ltd announced in August that the company expected to get its first C919 model by the end the year. But certification is required.
COMAC has been years late in obtaining its certification and did not fly the C919 from China to China’s largest airshow in Zhuhai, September 2009.
Wu Guanghui (C919 Chief Designer) recommended last month that CAAC focus its attention on certification for next year. She also requested it increase resources to assist with delivery and commercial operations.
