NEW YORK (Reuters] – An attorney for Donald Trump asked a U.S.Appeals Court to exonerate her from E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit arising in a decades old rape claim. Trump’s administration supported the argument.

Alina Habba was the lawyer who spoke before the panel at 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled that Trump was not subject to Carroll’s lawsuit as he was acting president during her claim.

According to her, allowing presidents to make other decisions could lead to an avalanche of lawsuits against them for simply speaking out on issues that are public.

Habba stated, “This isn’t a political issue.” This is about protecting the institution of the presidency.

Democratic President Joe Biden has claimed his Republican predecessor was acting in the presidency when Carroll denied his claims. Even though these claims involved Trump’s personal life and Carroll challenging Carroll for his credibility, his administration said that he was not acting as president.

Carroll was a well-known columnist for magazines and had claimed that Trump raped him in June 2019.

After Trump claimed that he had never met her, she said that “she’snt my type” and then sued her for defamation. She claimed that Trump made up the rape to make her book sell.
