UAE defence ministry says French warplanes not a substitute for U.S. jets -Breaking

DUBAI (Reuters – The United Arab Emirates defense ministry stated that it would purchase French Rafale fighter planes to complement the deal to buy American F-35 Warplanes. This plan has slowed down due to Washington’s concern about Abu Dhabi’s relations with China.

Friday was the day that the Gulf Arab country ordered 80 Rafales from Dassault Aviation as well 12 Caracal military helicopters manufactured by Airbus Helicopters under an arms agreement worth 17.2 billion euros.

Major General Ibrahim Nasser Al Alawi (commander of the UAE Air Force & Air Defence) stated in an announcement on the state news agency WAM on Saturday night that Rafale aircraft would replace the UAE’s French-built Mirage 2000 fleet.

Alawi stated that this deal was not meant to be an alternative to the F-35 deal. It is a complementary deal as we build our air force capabilities. He also said that the UAE has been seeking to replace its Mirage fleet for some time.

F-35 Warplanes sold by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: ) Traffic to UAE has been slowing due to Washington concerns over Abu Dhabi’s relation with China. This includes the possible use of Huawei 5G technology.

A U.S. official stated last month that the United States plans to proceed with the sale, but there needs to be an understanding of Emirati obligations.

Trump, then the US President, agreed to sell the planes. This was after Israel established relations with the UAE. According to President Joe Biden, the administration will continue with the sale.
