(Reuters] – Quantum: Computer software firm Cambridge Quantum stated Tuesday that its platform can create super secure cryptographic keys for commercial use.
The UK-based startup was made a subsidiary wholly owned by Quantinuum in 2015. Quantinuum is an international quantum computing software and hardware company. Honeywell International Inc. (NASDAQ:) owns a 54% interest.
In an interview with Reuters, Duncan Jones, head of cybersecurity for Cambridge Quantum said that the quantum computer generates a very random encryption key.
According to him, quantum computers generate more random encryption keys than conventional computers. It makes them safer and more vulnerable to hackers.
Cambridge Quantum announced that they would offer its Quantum Origin service to financial institutions and cybersecurity firms, and then expand it to other sectors with high priorities such as telecommunications or energy production, defense, and government.
Ilyas Khan (CEO of Quantinuum, founder of Cambridge Quantum) stated in a statement that “We have worked for many years on a way to efficiently use the unique characteristics of quantum computers to give our customers a defense against adversaries or criminals now as well in the future when quantum computers become more prevalent.”
“Quantum Origin” gives us the capability to be protected from all the powerful and sophisticated threats we face today and tomorrow, in addition to threats from quantum computer futures.
Quantum computers use quantum bits or qubits that are capable of setting one or zero simultaneously. This allows for exponentially greater paths than traditional computers, whose bits can only be either ones or zeros. Researchers believe quantum computers could operate millions of times faster than today’s advanced supercomputers.
