Kremlin expects no breakthrough at Putin-Biden talks, urges calm -Breaking

MOSCOW (Reuters). Despite mounting tensions, the Kremlin stated that it did not expect any breakthrough in virtual talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin of U.S President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

Biden will host a videoconference with Putin at approximately 1500 GMT, amid Western worries about Russian troops near Ukraine. According to U.S. officials, Biden will warn Putin about the severe economic consequences of an invasion by Russia.

Russia denies that it intends to attack Ukraine.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, told reporters Tuesday that Moscow regrets what he called White House’s predictable tendence to resort to sanctions. However, he said that Putin was open to listening to Biden and that the Kremlin leader would make his own.

There are no breakthroughs in this conversation. Peskov stated that it is a productive conversation in a difficult time.

He added that “the escalation tensions in Europe are off the scale. It is exceptional, and it requires a personal conversation at the highest levels.”
