(Reuters) – Twitter Inc (NYSE:) The social media site Tuesday announced that they will change the method by which users report inappropriate tweets. This is to make it simpler for users to complain about the content.
The test will include a limited number of Twitter Web users located in the United States. This comes amid widespread criticisms that technology companies such as Twitter, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:) Inc’s YouTube, do not adequately protect their users from abusive or harmful content online.
Instead of asking users to report how their tweet violates Twitter’s rules which assumes knowledge about the company’s policies, users will now be asked questions such as whether they feel attacked by hate, intimidated or harassed, and whether or not they are shown content that is related to self-harm.
Twitter stated that users will be able to explain why they flagged the content in their own words.
It’s similar to the doctor asking a patient questions about their symptoms, and then saying “Where does it hurt?” Instead of asking “Is your leg broken?” According to the company,
Brian Waismeyer (a data scientist for Twitter’s Health User Experience Team) stated in a statement that “People need to feel heard and supported” during times of urgent situations.
Twitter said that this new procedure will permit it to obtain more precise information on tweets which do not violate its guidelines, but are still problematic or offensive. It will also help Twitter update its policies.
This is just one of many recent updates that Twitter made in order to increase user safety. Twitter announced that the social media platform would prohibit sharing “personal media”, such as photos or videos, without consenting to the individual.
