(Reuters) – New restrictions on abortion rights in America and elsewhere are under consideration.
We present a list of worldwide abortion statistics, as well the most stringent abortion laws. These are based on data from both the U.N. World Health Organization and from the Guttmacher Institute research organization and Center for Reproductive Rights legal advocacy team. Both of these groups support abortion rights.
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 73 million worldwide abortions are performed each year. 61% of unintended pregnancies end in an abortion and 29% end in that. The WHO stated that approximately 45% of abortions in the world are unsafe, with 97% occurring in countries underdeveloped. According to a WHO fact sheet, unsafe abortions are a major – and preventable- cause of maternal morbidity and deaths.
According to Guttmacher Institute, there are approximately two dozen countries that ban abortion altogether. This list includes Egypt, Iraq and Laos as well as Senegal, Senegal. El Salvador, Nicaragua, El Salvador. Haiti, Haiti, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, and Nicaragua. According to Guttmacher Institute, there are about three dozen countries that allow abortion to be performed only in order to protect the life of the mother. This includes Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico as well as Iran, Afghanistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Ireland and Iran. About 40% of women who are in their reproductive years live where abortion access is limited or not legal.
– In the United States, a series of restrictive Republican-backed laws have been passed at the state level, with the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court considering overturning a 1973 precedent that legalized the procedure nationwide in a case involving a Mississippi abortion ban – blocked by lower courts – beginning at 15 weeks of pregnancy. On Friday, the court allowed abortion providers to challenge a Texas law which bans this procedure in Texas at six weeks. It was put into force in September.
January saw Poland pass a Constitutional Court decision banning abortions performed because of fetal defects. It is one of few grounds that can be used to terminate a pregnant woman in this predominantly Catholic country.
El Salvador is home to some of the most stringent abortion laws in the world. The procedure has been banned from El Salvador since 1998. Over 180 pregnant women have been prosecuted in El Salvador for aggravated or unintentional homicide and abortion over the past twenty years.
Malta denies women access to abortion even though their lives may be at risk. The EU’s only member that bans abortion completely. Females can spend up to 3 years in prison.
Senegal bans abortion, but the code of medical ethics in that country allows for it when three doctors feel it is necessary to save a woman’s life. According to a 2014 study, the laws force women seeking clandestine abortions to kill themselves and their infants as last resort.
Abortion is not legal in the United Arab Emirates unless the pregnancy is dangerous or the baby is likely to die. The maximum sentence for women could be one year imprisonment and a large fine. A woman who is admitted to hospital for miscarriage treatment may face charges of attempted abortion.
The Philippines is a Spanish colony and its anti-abortion laws are based on that. For more than a century, abortion was prohibited. Every year, around 1,000 Filipino women become pregnant. Spain is one of more than 50 countries to have relaxed abortion laws in the last quarter-century.
