Several southern U.S. states, including Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and Florida, have confirmed cases of the omicron Covid-19 variant as the highly mutated strain takes root in half of all U.S. states.
At a White House Covid briefing, Rochelle Walensky (director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) said that 25 states in America have reported cases of this new strain. This number is expected to rise as health officials anticipate an increase in these cases over the next few weeks. According to John Hopkins University data, the omicron cases are occurring as America struggles with an epidemic of Delta infections. The number of Covid cases has increased by 16% over the past week, and is up 23% from before Thanksgiving.
Scientists continue to race for answers about the transmissibility of omicrons, their severity and how they impact vaccine effectiveness. To detect the variant, more DNA sequencing is being done by state, commercial, and academic laboratories across the U.S.
Georgia
Georgia’s public health officers reported three instances of this variant. as of ThursdayAll of them live in Atlanta-metropolitan.
These were the first and second cases. announced in a press release on Sunday. A patient who had traveled from South Africa developed mild symptoms. She was then diagnosed as having Covid. According to the state health department, it received notification on December 3 regarding the second patient who was positive for Covid in New Jersey. He is now recovering.
However, the department didn’t provide any details on their symptoms and severity.
On Thursday, the third confirmed case occurred in an individual who was not vaccinated and had no previous international travel history. This patient has mild Covid symptoms, and is isolated at home.
According to Thursday’s press release, the Georgia Department of Public Health will conduct contact tracing in order to find close relatives of patients with HIV.
According to a press release, Kathleen Toomey, State Health Commissioner said that vaccination is “key” in preventing Covid from spreading and the appearance of new variants such as omicron. The majority of U.S. infections are still caused by delta, according to her.
Toomey stated, “It is also important to keep in mind that although Omicron has emerged, we still find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic being fuelled by the Delta variant.”
CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Wallenksy claimed that Delta is still responsible for more than 99% in all cases of U.S. genetically sequenced patients.
After the number of positive test results for the virus had dropped to below 1000 for much of November, Georgia’s seven-day average was 1,334 on Thursday. according to data from the CDC. While the number of positive tests has been increasing steadily since Thanksgiving, it is still well below the 7k-9k averages for August.

Another confirmed case was also found in Northshore, Louisiana.
However, the state health department didn’t provide any additional details about the extent of the infection. Only the Acadiana region had a patient who traveled to other countries recently. However, he did not need hospitalization for his positive test results.
“These Omicron cases should remind us of the continuing threat to COVID as we gather to celebrate the holidays,” Dr. Joseph Kanter, the State Health Officer in Louisiana, said in a press release. Kanter also encouraged Louisianans get their vaccines and boosters.

The Harris County Public Health Department is investigating this case.
“Viruses can mutate and it’s not unusual for them to do so, and considering the rapid spread of Omicron in south Africa, we aren’t surprised that it has made its way here,” stated Dr. John Hellerstedt (the state health department commissioner).
Texas had a 7.7-day average moving of 2.554 cases for Thursday according to data from the CDC. The seven-day average moving average of 9,000 and 19,000 respectively is much lower than it was during the preceding months.
