BERLIN (Reuters), German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), to support the new government coalition. He added that promises made in the election campaign had now to be fulfilled.

Scholz spoke at the virtual SPD convention where the party’s new leader was elected. He said that the new government must allay Germans fears about globalization, climate change, and digitalisation.

Scholz said, following Angela Merkel’s election as chancellor, “I count on you to support that work.”

He stated that the modern social democratic party must communicate to the people that “all will be well”, and that this includes maintaining well-paid, industrial jobs within Europe’s largest economy.

Scholz was elected to the presidency after sixteen years of conservative government under Merkel. He launched his three-way coalition, which promised to promote green investments and enhance European integration.

Saskia Eken and Lars Klingbeil were named as new party leaders by the convention. These two will serve as co-chiefs of the SPD. Kevin Kuehnert, who took over from Klingbeil, was elected as the SPD’s general secretary.
