PUEBLA Mexico (Reuters) – Some migrants advancing through Mexico promised to continue their journey towards the United States after a fatal accident that occurred in the southern part of Mexico. It claimed the lives of dozens of Guatemalans.

On Thursday, at least 55 migrants were killed in a truck that flipped on the highway of Chiapas. Several others were also injured.

The truck, carrying 166 people, crashed onto a curve just outside Tuxtla Gutierrez. This caused one of the most tragic deaths of Mexican migrants over the last decade.

As the Mexican government attempts to stop migrants from crossing their territory, the incident occurred.

Many migrants, including families and children with young children, were shocked to hear about the tragic incident. Some said that they would continue to travel to Mexico, or the United States, despite all the dangers involved in the journey. This can involve relying upon people smugglers called “coyotes”.

Lety, an Honduran migrant who walked with a group of migrants in large numbers on Friday, stated, “I think that for everything it has done, it is worthwhile moving forward.”

“I encourage everyone who is here to keep supporting each other, unite together, and I’m very sorry for the events that have occurred to others,” she said. It hurts me greatly because humans are people and feel.

Recent days saw dozens of migrants move from Tapachula, the southern border town of Mexico to Puebla. This was as Mexican immigration authorities tried to demolish an improvised camp to prevent potential caravans north of migrating migrants.

A previous promise by the Mexican government to migrants was for humanitarian visas and transport to other cities.

Carmen Morales (27-year-old Guatemalan woman) was on her way to Mexico City Saturday when she said that it was impossible to stop going towards the United States.

Morales stated, “God Save the People Who Died, They are Already in Another Place, But We Have to Feed the Family.”

She said that “we have to continue trying anyway to get to the United States”, adding that although she was afraid of the dangerous journey, she had no plans to return home in Guatemala.

Officials condemned the Chiapas incident https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/guatemala-seeks-aid-smuggler-crackdown-after-mexico-migrant-deaths-2021-12-11 as the danger of human-trafficking at the hands of coyotes, who often put migrants in perilous situations, including overcrowded trucks, on the journey to reach the U.S. border.
