LONDON, (Reuters) – Support for Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, and his Conservative Party have plummeted following a string of scandals. According to a Saturday poll, a majority believe he should resign.

Johnson is being criticized on many fronts these weeks, from funding the renovation of Downing Street to the claim that he intervened in order to evacuate pets from Kabul in the chaos of Western withdrawal.

Most damaging are reports of a party held on Downing Street in 2020 during the Christmas lockdown. A video emerged this week showing staff laughing and joke about it.

According to the Opinium survey for the Observer newspaper, support for Conservatives fell to 32% from their solid lead in polls after winning a landslide victory at a 2019 election. However, backing for Labour Party increased to 41% which is its largest lead since 2014.

Johnson’s personal ratings are at their lowest since the election. Johnson’s approval rating stood at -35%. That is 14 points lower than two weeks prior. In addition, 57% of the voters voted for Johnson to resign. That’s up from 48% only two weeks prior.

According to political commentators there has been growing dissatisfaction among Conservative legislators about Johnson’s leadership. It is likely that many will vote against Johnson’s plan to introduce new measures to stop the spread Omicron coronavirus.

Adam Drummond of Opinium’s Head of Political Polling said, “The results of our recent poll are certainly dramatic with a devastating decline in both support of the Conservatives” and approval of the prime minister.”

Johnson, he warned, was “the king of comebacks”, having recovered before from challenging polling circumstances.

He said, “But, unless Conservatives turn these numbers around fast, backbenchers may start to ask if the party has over for the prime Minister.”
