U.S. to coordinate with Mexico, regional countries for crackdown on people smuggling -Breaking

MEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – The United States and Mexico will cooperate to capture the human smugglers who caused the deadly incident that claimed the lives of dozens of migrants in Mexico, according to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.

The Embassy announced that a task force was formed to identify, arrest, and prosecute the people involved in the organization of a trailer containing more than 160 migrants. This caravan crashed on Thursday in Chiapas, Mexico. At least 55 migrants from Guatemala were among those killed, while dozens more were hurt.

According to the Embassy, USA, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras would all support these efforts. However, coordination is open to all countries in the region.

The embassy released a statement saying that they have agreed to share the responsibility of applying the full force of the law to those responsible and to work together to fight human trafficking in all its forms.

Recent years have seen thousands of Central America migrants cross Mexico from Central America to seek refuge from poverty and violence. These migrants often have to travel through dangerous terrain, such as in cramped trucks, which are organized by smugglers known as “coyotes.”

Guatemala urged Friday the United States to make investments in Central America and Guatemala to spur development.
