VATICAN CITY (Reuters – Pope Francis called Sunday’s first comment on tensions in Ukraine between Russia and West for dialogue. Both sides were asked to stop any armed conflict.

He stated that he was praying to “dear Ukraine”, for its various churches, religious communities, and its citizens, in order for tensions there to be resolved by a serious international dialog and not using weapons.

“Weapons is not the way to go. The pope addressed thousands in St. Peter’s Square to pray for peace and blessings on Ukraine during Christmas.

Ukraine has an Orthodox Christian majority. Around 10% of Ukraine’s population is Catholics, who are either Catholics of the Latin Rite of Byzantine Rite.

On Saturday, U.S. President Joe Biden stated that he told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia would have to pay “a terrible cost” and suffer devastating economic consequences should it invade Ukraine.

Russia was accused of massing thousands of troops to prepare for large-scale military operations in Ukraine.

Russia claims that it has not planned any attacks and also accuses the United States and Ukraine of destabilising behavior. It stated that it requires security guarantees to ensure its safety.
