BEIJING, (Reuters) – China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding dismissed a female employee for accusing a co-worker in sexual assault. This was reported by government-backed newspaper Dahe Daily late Saturday.

Dahe Daily spoke with the employee and she stated that she received termination notice at the end November. Dahe Daily published a copy.

According to the letter, the employee was accused of spreading false information regarding being assaulted by another worker and that the company had not taken action. This “caused great social concern, and had a negative impact on company,” the letter said.

According to the newspaper, the employee stated in an interview that “I haven’t made any errors” and would not accept the result.

Alibaba failed to respond outside of normal business hours. The request for comment was not responded to by the lawyer of the employee.

Alibaba, China’s biggest e-commerce company, was hit by the sexual assault allegations in August. A female employee posted an account to the intranet of Alibaba stating she had been assaulted during a business trip by a coworker and by a client.

Alibaba dismissed the employee accused of assaulting another worker, and also fired 10 others for making the incident public.

Chinese prosecutors eventually dropped the case against the co-worker of the employee. He stated that he had committed forcible decency, but not a criminal offense, and they approved the client being arrested in the early part of September.

China has a history of issues like sexual harassment, assault and violence. However, these topics were seldom brought up until 2018’s #MeToo movement. In that year, a Beijing college student made a public accusation of her professor for sexual harassment.
