(Reuters) – Haitian President Jovenel Moise was compiling a list containing officials and businessmen connected to the drug trade, according to Sunday’s New York Times report. He also said he would give these names to the U.S. government.
A group of former Colombian soldiers attacked Moise’s home late at night and killed him. Haitian authorities arrested 45 suspects, but they have yet to charge anyone.
Some of the people who were arrested confessed to stealing the list of suspect drug traffickers’ names. According to the Times, three top Haitian officials had knowledge of this investigation.
According to the Times, “The document was part a larger series of clashes Mr. Moise experienced with influential political and business leaders, some of whom are suspected of arms and narcotics trafficking,”
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Ariel Henry didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment.
The murder of Moise left Haiti with no president and created a vacuum in politics. It also fueled an increase of kidnappings from gangs, which now have control of large swathes of the Caribbean country.
Although the government promises to bring justice, judicial officers have reported threats and intimidation.
