DUBAI, (Reuters) -U.S. troops conducted a large-scale airborne operation in the vicinity of Deir al-Zor in eastern Syria Monday at dawn. This was according to SANA state news agency.
It said that the American forces arrived in Busayra (east of Deir al-Zor) and “kidnapped several civilians.”
The report was not confirmed by an independent source.
Deir al-Zor lies along the border with Iraq. It is an important supply route for Iranian-backed militias, which regularly send reinforcements into Syria in support to President Bashar al-Assad and other rebels.
U.S. forces have been deployed to an al-Tanf base, south of Deir al-Zor as part of a combat mission against Islamic State militants, who are still fighting a low-level rebellion in Syria and Iraq.
