RAVANUSA, Italy, (Reuters) – Rescuers began removing bodies Monday morning from the debris of homes that had been destroyed in Saturday’s gas explosion in Ravanusa in Sicilia. At least seven persons were confirmed to have died as a result of the fire.
According to a Reuters witness, Sniffer dogs discovered four bodies, including a nine-month-old nurse. Firefighters and Civil Protection Department men were removing them from the wreckage.
A spokesperson for the National Fire Service stated that the service found three bodies in the hours between Saturday and Sunday, and that two more people were still missing.
Four houses were destroyed and three more damaged in Saturday’s explosion. Authorities said that the gas leak from town pipes likely caused the blast. However, an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause.
Ravanusa, a small town with approximately 11,000 inhabitants is located near Agrigento in southwestern Sicilia. It is known for its Greek temples.
