Weibo fined by Chinese regulator for publishing illegal information -Breaking

China’s Cyberspace Administration ()Weibo claimed that Weibo violated cybersecurity laws on protection of minors and other laws, but didn’t give any further information.
In addition, it stated that Beijing’s Cyberspace Regulator had placed 44 penalties against Weibo amounting to 14.3 Million Yuan in the 12 months ended November.
CAC stated in a statement that the company operates a platform comparable to Twitter (NYSE :). It was required to promptly correct and address any relevant people responsible.
Weibo stated in a statement that it accepts criticism from regulators and created a working group to address the penalties.
This is just the latest of a series of sanctions the regulator has placed on tech companies in the past year. It comes amid tighter supervision of a tightly controlled internet, which has also seen new guidelines for online news and platforms. Authorities claim they wish to encourage a “civilized” internet.
They also banned social media sites from aggressively advertising celebrities.
The CAC recently fined Douban (a site that reviews movies) 1.5 million Yuan for “unlawful publication of information”.
