(Reuters] ATA IMS Malaysian Parts Maker said Tuesday that the company has requested for labour law violations to be dropped. The manufacturer claimed infractions stemmed from “challenges presented by pandemic”.

According to the Labour Department, ATA was indicted for four violations of minimum standards regarding worker accommodation.

ATA currently is in the news after Dyson, a British appliance manufacturer decided to terminate its ATA contract with Dyson within six months following an audit by Dyson of their labour practices and allegations by a whistleblower.

ATA claimed in a statement, that charges are rooted in inspections carried out by labour under the Ministry of Human Resources in May.

Inspecting the accommodation facilities, we found that they had accommodated workers who wanted to go back to their homelands. Their work permits were expired and had to be renewed. However, due to travel restrictions, departure was delayed.

It stated that the company provided accommodations for workers, “which unfortunately contradicted with standard regulations”.

ATA said it was confident that, with the variety of improvements taken, it is in compliance with all standards and regulations. The charges are not connected to the Dyson contract-related claims that were reported by the media.

Malaysia’s attorney general and labour department did not immediately reply to inquiries for comment.

Reuters reports that ATA’s majority migrant workforce worked overtime over the monthly limit of 104 hours and on Sundays.

ATA manufactures parts for Dyson vacuum cleaners.

According to the company, it is taking steps to prevent the recurrence. It also stated that it had implemented a zero-hours policy on Sundays which led to nearly 300 resignations in the first week.
