WASHINGTON (Reuters), -The District of Columbia Attorney general Karl Racine announced Tuesday that he will file a civil lawsuit against two extremist groups, the Proud Boys & Oath Keepers. This follows the January 6th attack on Capitol Hill.
Racine stated to reporters that Washington’s residents had suffered financial and physical harm from the defendants. Racine also said that Washington will pursue “severe financial sanctions” against the defendants.
This lawsuit is filed to recover costs associated with the deployment of hundreds of police officers in the city to protect the Capitol from the attack, as well as any medical or paid leave costs.
They also face civil assault, battery and criminal contempt charges for the organizations and the 50 individuals it says were involved.
