REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File Photo(Reuters) – Eric Adams, the New York mayor-elect, will appoint a female commissioner to the police department of New York for the first time since its 176-year-old history. Local media reported Tuesday.
According to New York’s Daily News, Adams is a former New York City Police Captain and will present Keechant Selwell during a Queens news conference on Wednesday.
“Keechant Sewell is a proven crime fighter with the experience and emotional intelligence to deliver both the safety New Yorkers need and the justice they deserve,” Adams said in a statement published by the newspaper.
The New York Times reports that Sewell is a veteran of 23 years at the Nassau County police department. She is currently chief of detectives. New York City would have her as its third Black police chief.
Dermot Shea is the current Commissioner. He was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2019.
“We welcome Chief Sewell to the second-toughest policing job in America,” Patrick Lynch, president of the city’s major police union, said in a written statement. “The toughest, of course, is being an NYPD cop on the street.”
