Ford Bronco SUV does not win ‘Top Safety Pick’

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Ford Motor (NYSE 🙂 Co’s brand new four-door SUV, 2021 Bronco, was disqualified by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety because it had issues with its headlights.

Industry-funded research found that the Bronco’s helmets were not effective in protecting against whiplash injury and that its headlights are inadequately lit on curves.

Good ratings must be earned in the six IIHS crashworthiness checks. Five of six test ratings were good for the Bronco, but the Head Restraint Test was not. The neck of the test subject experienced moderate force from a simulated rear end crash. This gave it an acceptable rating.

Automobile manufacturers often boast IIHS Top Safety Pick ratings. All trims must include standard-fitting headlights with acceptable or high-rated ratings to be considered a Top Safety Pick+.

Ford noted in a statement “all of Bronco’s safety features meet or exceed federal safety standards.”

Ford has sold 25855 Broncos SUVs in America through Nov. 30,
