SHANGHAI (Reuters – A Chinese former Wall Street banker and founder of a private capital fund has vanished after Chinese authorities launched an investigation into alleged financial misconduct. Financial magazine Caixin reported that the report was published on Thursday.
Police in Beijing sought Wang Chaoyong, Chinaequity Investment Co, Ltd’s founding chairman and chief executive, and he hasn’t been seen since, said the magazine, citing anonymous sources.
Unspecified regulators discovered that the company misappropriated funds from the fund and had pledged properties from the fund in order to finance parties related to the case. Caixin also reported the findings.
Chinaequity did not return phone calls requesting comment from Beijing office.
It was not possible to reach the economic investigation unit of the Chaoyang branch, Beijing’s public security bureau for immediate comment.
Wang was employed by JP Morgan. Morgan Stanley (NYSE:) is one of the other financial companies featured prominently on this company’s site.
The 56-year-old was last seen in his office in the Chinese capital’s central business district on the afternoon of Nov. 29, Caixin reported.
The company’s website states that Forbes ranked the firm as one of China’s top 25 private equity/venture capital firms with an equity valuation of more than $3 billion in 2015.
