(Reuters) – The United States registered Wednesday the most hurricane-force gusts ever recorded in a single-day period, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). This was just days after the worst tornado outbreak in American history.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center tweeted that more than 55 gusts exceeding 75mph (121kph), were observed in several Midwestern states. They cited data as far back as 10:00 Central Time. 19 tornadoes were also reported by the Center.
The previous data, which dates back to 2004, showed that there were 53 Hurricane-force gusts per day for August 10, 2020.
On Wednesday, severe weather at Kansas City International Airport caused several power outages. It also brought about reports of wildfires.
After a severe tornado that ravaged the area on Friday, 74 people were killed in Kentucky and fourteen in neighboring states.
