KUALA LUMPUR, (Reuters) – More than 21,000 have been evacuated from their homes by flooding in Malaysia. This was according to Bernama state news agency.
Perak is the latest victim of flooding. Flooding worsened elsewhere in six states.
According to the news agency, “Over 21,000 persons had been evacuated from flood-prone homes and taken to relief centers by noon.”
On Saturday over 11,000 people were evacuated from their homes by heavy rains.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said at a press conference in Selangor (Malaysia’s most wealthy and populous region around Kuala Lumpur) that more than 100 relief centres had helped 15,000 residents.
He stated that the rains over the previous day were equivalent to normal rainfall.
He stated that efforts to rescue those still trapped in their vehicles or outside of homes are ongoing, and reports from those stuck at home were resolved.
Over 66,000 people from the fire, police and army were mobilised Saturday night to rescue flood victims and transport them to safety.
Although the Meteorological Department had warned about dangerous levels of torrential rains in Perak’s area, they have downgraded Selangor to an alert level.
Ismail announced also that the government would allocate a initial amount of 100 million Ringgit ($23.71 Million) to house and infrastructure repair and financial assistance for affected households.
