REUTERS/JeenaISLAMABAD, (Reuters) – Muslim countries sought to address the humanitarian and economic crisis in Afghanistan. Pakistani neighbours opened an unprecedented meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Sunday.
The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan with its millions of people facing starvation as winter approaches has raised alarm. However, due to Western hesitation to assist the Taliban government in August, the international community has been unable to coordinate its response.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan’s foreign minister, stated that the meeting between officials of the 57-nation Group and foreign ministers was meant to increase support for Afghanistan. Any effort should be made to improve the situation.
“A humanitarian and economic meltdown in Afghanistan will have repercussions beyond its borders – mass exodus of refugees, instability and violence,” he told Reuters in an email.
Representatives from the United Nations and other international financial institutions will be attending the two-day Islamabad gathering.
Amir Khan Muttaqi (Taliban’s Acting Foreign Minister) is also present, even though no country has recognized the Kabul administration.
Taliban officials asked for assistance in rebuilding Afghanistan’s crumbling economy, and providing food to more than 20 millions people who are at risk of starvation. While some aid agencies and countries have already begun to deliver aid, the banking system in Afghanistan is nearing collapse has complicated their efforts.
Afghanistan requires assistance beyond the immediate need for aid. It also needs support to ensure long-term economic stability. Washington’s willingness to lift the sanctions placed on Taliban leaders by many countries and governments will determine how much assistance is provided.
Taliban who were in control of Afghanistan since 2001 have announced an amnesty for former officials and stated that they won’t allow Afghanistan to become a target in attacks against other countries.
They have come under heavy criticism because they keep girls from high school in the majority of the country. In addition, they are accused of targeting ex-officials despite promises of amnesty.
