Russian court hands father of Navalny ally 3-year suspended sentence, lawyer says -Breaking

MOSCOW, (Reuters) – A Russian court gave a three year suspended sentence to the father of Alexei Navalny, a Kremlin critic and ex-convict, Sunday. His lawyer stated that this was in a corruption matter critics believe is without merit.

Vladimir Voronin, Yury Zhdanov’s lawyer, stated earlier this week that the prosecution had requested Yury Zhdanov (67) be sentenced for three years imprisonment on fraud- and forgery charges.

Russia has banned Navalny’s political network because it is considered extremist. This was part of its crackdown against the group.

Ivan Zhdanov is Zhdanov’s child and is currently based overseas. He claims that Zhdanov is being punished for his political activity.

Zhdanov denied guilt and spent months in pre-trial custody. However, he was released on Sunday following sentencing.
