Philippine death toll from Typhoon Rai climbs to 208 -police -Breaking

Reported by REUTERS, Philippine Coast Guard/Handout MANILA, Reuters – Typhoon Rai’s death toll has risen from 208 to 208 in the Philippines, following the destruction of central and southern Philippine provinces last week. The spokesperson for the National Police said Monday.
Police data shows that 52 people are still missing as emergency relief continues following one of the most destructive typhoons ever to strike the Southeast Asian country.
Roderick Alb, spokesperson of the National Police said that relief operations have been launched and police are being mobilized in order to maintain order in areas affected by calamity.
Police cited a far greater number of deaths than the total of 58 recorded by the National Disaster Agency up until now. It said that it still validates reports from the affected regions.
Over half of all deaths recorded by the police involved fatalities in central Visayas. This region includes Bohol, which is home to many of the country’s top tourist attractions, including diving spots.
Bohol Governor Arthur Yap reported that there were 74 people who died in the province on Sunday. Yap cited incomplete reports which were verified both by local officials and the health department.
While relief efforts have been rapid, they are still hampered due to damage to communications and power lines. These have yet to be repaired in many of the devastated regions.
Rai had already displaced almost 490,000. People in the Philippines when it headed towards the South China Sea. It also caused massive destruction in Surigao del Norte and Cebu provinces, as well as the Siargao surf destination and the Dinagat Islands.
Rodrigo Duterte is committing to release approximately 2 billion pesos ($40million) of funds in support of recovery efforts in typhoon ravaged provinces.
