WASHINGTON (Reuters), General Motors Co. said Monday that they will continue to produce the Chevrolet Bolt electric automobile at Orion Assembly in Michigan until February.

In August, America’s largest automaker increased the Bolt recall by more than 140,000 to replace damaged battery modules following a series fires. The company extended production to January through the end of this month. GM has indefinitely ceased retail sales of Bolt models.

After the August production halt at the Detroit suburb plant, Orion began two weeks of production starting Nov. 1. This was to ensure that customers have courtesy vehicles in case they need them during recall repairs.

Mark Reuss of GM stated that in October, the company had addressed the recall and was ready to resume production. Monday, the company stated it will prioritize recall repairs while focusing on replacing battery modules.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating the issue of battery fires. All Chevrolet Bolt electric cars were recalled by the agency in August due to the potential for the battery packs’ high-voltage fire catching on fire.

GM announced in October that South Korea’s LG Electronics had been its battery partner and agreed to pay it $2 billion for estimated expenses and costs associated with the Bolt recall.

GM Energy Solution and LG Energy Solution will jointly build two U.S.-based battery plants. Reuters published an earlier report this month that GM proposed to build a $2.5 Billion battery plant in Lansing, Michigan with LG Energy Solution. The city documents were cited by Reuters.

In order to produce next-generation electric cars, the largest U.S. automobile manufacturer is considering an additional $2 billion renovation of Orion Township’s assembly plant. According to Reuters, the total investment could exceed $4 billion according to a source who is familiar with this plan.
