As investors shift from growth stocks towards safer and more reliable equities, the utilities sector has seen gains over the last month. With this in mind, I will be analyzing and comparing two utility stocks: DTE Energy (DTE), and Xcel Energy The utilities sector includes companies providing electricity, water and wastewater services for various clients, such as residential, commercial and industrial. Research and Markets predicts that global utilities will increase at a rate of 7% during the next three year, and could reach $5996.57 trillion by 2025.

In spite of high demand and fluctuating business cycles, the utilities sector has a tendency to remain stable throughout these periods. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR (NYSE:) has returned 11.6% over the past year. This is lower than the overall market. Yes, the XLU is up 2.41% in the past month, as the S&P 500 has slid 3.44%.

Investors may want to add utilities stocks to their portfolios, as market volatility increases. Therefore, today I’ll analyze and compare two utilities stocks: DTE Energy Company (NYSE:) and Xcel Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:).
