(Reuters) – Due to COVID-19 concerns, the National Hockey League won’t send any of its players to the Beijing Olympics men’s ice hockey competition. This is because the Omicron virus which causes the Omicron coronavirus to spread globally has been reported by ESPN on Tuesday.

Last September, the NHL decided to suspend its regular season to allow the top NHL players to compete in Beijing. However, it was open to withdrawing if COVID-19 disrupts caused games to be moved during the Olympics window.

It was looking more likely that this would happen in the recent past with the NHL forced to cancel several games in Canada, the United States and elsewhere in Canada after increasing numbers of players signed COVID-19 protocols. Omicron also looked into professional sports leagues in which fully vaccinated participants tested positive.

Without financial penalties, the NHL could withdraw from the February 4-20 Beijing Olympics by Jan. 10.
