MAYFIELD KY. (Reuters). Survivors of the tornado which ravaged Mayfield last week are coming to terms with the losses. The Humane Society is focusing its attention on the animals and cats still in their homes or under porches.

A group of four-wheel-drive cars belonging to the Humane Society of the United States headed out in search of strays in order to find their owners. They left Calvert City’s budget hotel on Thursday.

Kitty Block of Humane Society, chief executive said, “Sadly, many people have died in these homes, and they’re just going to end up bulldozing the place.” She traveled to Mayfield.

“Cats hide in the eaves. They’re under porches. They live in the houses. We just need to find them now before they become a problem.

David Spalding (the shelter’s president) stated that nearly 70 animals are currently housed at the Mayfield Graves County Animal Shelter. There is still room for additional animals.

Block explained that their goal was to take the pet to the shelter to be treated as necessary and to then get “the message out” that people could come to their animal, retrieve their animal, and reunite them with their beloved pets.

Block spoke while she tried to get a red, gray and white cat to be carried in a carrier. Humane Society volunteers and workers tried to coax scared cats away from undergrowth and bush, and attached notices to demolish any homes found.

Many pet owners enjoy happy reunions.

Bill Kenney from Mayfield held Sid his 8-month old dog.

Kenney said, “I missed my boy.” He’s my sidekick. “He goes wherever I go. He gets mad when I take him somewhere.”
