(Reuters) – Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Hong Kong will cancel certain passenger flights on January 1st due to operational and travel restrictions at a time that the Asian financial center has increased quarantine requirements.

The company stated in a notice on its website that “the new consolidated schedule would result in many flight cancellations”, without providing details.

Responding to our request for comments on these routes, the carrier didn’t immediately respond.

According to Reuters, a travel industry source said that cancellations occurred on long-haul flights from Australia to North America.

Cathay Australia’s website stated that it will only fly from Hong Kong to Sydney in January. There are no flights to Melbourne or Brisbane, but these were destinations in December.

Cathay was planning to fly only 12% in December. This is after cancelling many of its flights to accommodate crew who were unable to be available for the tough rosters that required five weeks in hotels.

Hong Kong has tightened its travel guidelines since Omicron was created. Foreigners arriving in Hong Kong are restricted to residents and citizens who have been fully immunized.

As it tries to convince Beijing to permit cross-border travel, the Hong Kong government is following a similar policy to mainland China.
