NBA gives media personnel and in-person league officials who work in close proximity of players or teams on game days a new mandate. They must receive the COVID-19 booster shot no later than Jan. 5.

The updated protocol was described by David Weiss, the senior vice president of player affairs. This protocol applies to any non-player staff who is eligible for a third dose COVID-19 vaccination as per the Centers for Disease Control.

The order includes “league staff or vendors who in their formal capacities interact in person avec any player”, within 15 feet. This includes referees and league operations.

Each team was informed that it would monitor the situation and immediately report any problems to the league.

This shift comes after comments made by Adam Silver, commissioner of the NFL, Tuesday during an interview on ESPN. He said that data and medical advisors point out very low viral transmission among persons who have received three doses of mRNA shots plus booster. Based on positive gene tests, Silver stated that those who have received three doses of mRNA shots and booster aren’t “shedding the virus.”

According to the NBA, Wednesday’s release stated that it was based on “discussions with NBA infectious disease experts and other medical specialists, CDC guidance, initial data showing substantial reduced protection against Omicron variants absent a booster”

After only 17 positives for COVID-19 in November and October, the NBA has seen a nationwide increase in COVID-19-related cases. In the 21st day of December, more than 115 positive COVID-19 tests were performed on players.

Silver assured that all games would go as planned, unless the roster is too large. This was also true for postponements on Thursdays (Brooklyn Nets at Portland Trail Blazers), and Wednesday’s (Toronto Raptors @ Chicago Bulls).
