OSLO (Reuters). Norway’s $1.4 trillion wealth fund divested Yunnan Baiyao from Chinese pharmaceutical company Yunnan Baiyao. The firm uses and sells pangolin body parts, which is an endangered species.
In a Tuesday statement, the fund stated that Marfrig Global Foods (one of Brazil’s biggest beef producers) was under surveillance for potential exclusion of its investments due to contributing to “severe environment damage”.
One of the largest global investors, this fund follows an ethical mandate from parliament. It is prohibited from investing in companies producing nuclear weapons, tobacco, or cluster munitions, and it has been voted one of the most ethical.
According to fund data, Yunnan Baiyao was owned by the fund at 0.11%. This stake was valued at $23 million as of 2021. It didn’t say when it made the divestment. China’s company could not be reached immediately.
Marfrig is Marfrig’s ethical watchdog. It stated that deforestation happens on properties within its supply chain.
Marfrig has failed to monitor suppliers sufficiently in order to prevent deforestation. Furthermore, the Amazon (NASDAQ). has been the main target of the Amazon monitoring system. “Suppliers from countries with high rates of deforestation were not checked,” said the watchdog.
Marfrig acknowledged the need to protect the environment in Brazil and sent an emailed response. Marfrig stated that it will track all its Amazon suppliers, including indirect sales, by 2025 in order to make sure its products do not deforest. The company stated that this will expand to include all Brazilian biomes in 2030.
Outside of normal business hours, the company could not be reached for comment immediately. Fund data shows that the fund held a $4.4 million stake in the company at 0.22% as of the end 2020.
