(Reuters) – Two men were accused of robbing Mary Gay Scanlon from her car at gunpoint. They did so after she met with other elected officials.

Scanlon was a Democrat and represents Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District. The mid-afternoon carjacking occurred while she was walking to her vehicle. Police said that two armed men approached her. They were believed to have been between 20-30 years of age.

According to police, the suspects demanded her keys and she gave them to them. One man took off in her car, while the other drove away in a second SUV. The pair then made their escape.

Police said that the vehicle was stolen from Scanlon and several of his personal items as well as work-related belongings.

Police stated that Philadelphia Police Department had been working alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This was because the victim of the attack is a member of Congress.

Scanlon (62), who serves in the House of Representatives from November 2018 posted a short statement on Twitter (NYSE :). He thanked the police for their “swift responses.”

Lauren Cox (her spokesperson) said that she had just finished an outdoor meeting with other elected representatives at FDR park in south Philadelphia for plans for future renovations when the carjacking happened.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw released a statement saying that “I am relieved Congresswoman Scanlon did not sustain any physical injuries, and my thoughts are for her during this difficult period.”

Because Scanlon was a public figure or politician, police declined to comment on whether Scanlon might have been targeted by carjackers.

Scanlon is Vice Chair of the House Administration Committee and serves on the House Judiciary, Rules and House Judiciary committees.
