Cases of Covid-19 are likely going to keep surging as the omicron variant rapidly spreads across the globe, U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday.

Every day, it keeps increasing. The last weekly average was about 150,000 and it likely will go much higher,” Fauci said on ABC’s “This Week.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 51,000,000 cases had been reported in the United States as of Thursday. This was before Covid trackers were disrupted by the holiday weekend. In mid-December, the U.S. had also recorded 800,000.

The omicron strain, which was the dominant strain just a week before the surge began, is what’s driving the growth.

The strain is extremely transmissible. However, research are ongoing. starting to indicateHospitalizations are not affected as much. Fauci said that it is important not to be complacent now.

Fauci explained that having many, many, more people with less severe illness could neutralize any positive effects of having less severity. We are particularly concerned about the unvaccinated. They are most at risk when the virus is extremely potent in infecting people.
