CARACAS (Reuters – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Sunday that he would soon travel to Iran in order to sign new cooperation agreements with the Middle Eastern nation. Iran has been Venezuela’s most trusted ally for boosting its oil production amid U.S. sanctions.

Venezuela and Iran have reaffirmed their relations since last year.

Maduro’s government has been able to receive vital equipment for the oil industry from Iran. The South American country has in turn received crude oil, and other resources. Venezuela’s growing oil production has relied on Iran for its success in 2021.

Maduro spoke in Spanish during a conversation with Al Mayadeen (satellite news broadcaster) about his plans to visit Teheran for an offer to him.

Maduro claimed that he’d had telephone conversations twice with Iran’s president. He also said that they had agreed to discuss new plans but did not give details. The date of the visit was not given by Maduro, but he called the countries “fighters.”

Maduro said that Venezuela would also seek to revive cooperation with Arab nations in 2022. He added that they love Venezuela and that Arab peoples are proud of Venezuela.

Venezuela is now unable to export crude oil or import fuel due to the tightening U.S. sanction since 2019. This has contributed to gasoline shortages in Venezuela.
