(Reuters] – An official at U.N. said he was shocked by reports of the murder of at least 35 civilians, in Myanmar. He called for an investigation into the matter.

Although the ruling military did not comment on the Friday incident in Kayah State near Mo So, Kayah State’s spokesman Zaw Min Tu could not reach him for comment.

According to state media, soldiers fired upon and killed unspecified numbers of terrorists using weapons from military forces. Civil casualties were not mentioned by the state media.

U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said the reports of the killing of the civilians, including at least one child, were credible.

He said that he condemned the attack on civilians in the country and other attacks, as well as all violations of international humanitarian law.

Griffiths demanded a “deep and transparent investigation” to bring the perpetrators to justice. He also called for protection for civilians.

A human rights group and residents in the vicinity claimed soldiers had murdered civilians. Photos taken by the rights organization showed bodies that had been burned, with some lying in the backs of trucks.

Myanmar’s political turmoil began on February 1, after the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Prize winner and elected president of Myanmar.

According to the Association for Assistance of Political Prisoners, more than 1300 protestors have been killed and over 11,000 people were jailed.

According to the military, there is no death count for this group.

Many military opponents have taken arms and joined forces with ethnic minorities guerrillas, who for many years have been fighting for the right to self-determination in different parts of the country.

Two of the Save the Children workers who were returning to their villages at the end of the year for the holiday had been missing. It had to suspend operations in Kayah State as well as parts of the neighboring Karen State.
