Rising Omicron cases disrupt air travel, 800 more flights canceled -Breaking

REUTERS/Jeenah Moon(Reuters) – U.S. Airlines cancelled 800 additional flights Monday, after nixing thousands more flights over the Christmas weekend. Omicron cases in the US are rising, forcing crews and travelers to search for other travel options.
The shares of American Airlines, NASDAQ:) Group Inc., United Airlines Holdings, NASDAQ:) Inc., Delta Air Line Inc. and Southwest Airlines (NYSE;) Co fell between 2%-3% before the opening bell.
According to FlightAware.com’s flight tracking website, nearly 740 flights had been cancelled within the United States, in or out of the United States, as early Monday morning.
These flight cancellations were in addition to over 3,000 cancelled flights during the Christmas weekend. This is a popular time of year for Americans to travel.
Airlines have had to cancel their flights due to rising infectious diseases. Pilots and crew members were required to be quarantined, while travelers are also affected by poor weather conditions in certain areas.
Reuters reached out to American, United Southwest, Delta and Southwest for comments but they did not respond immediately.
Cruise operators Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE:) Holdings, Royal Caribbean (NYSE) Cruises Ltd., Carnival (NYSE) Corp also fell between 1.3% & 2.4%
According to media reports, three ships had to dock at port over the weekend after being notified that they were carrying COVID-19-related cases.
Travel firms Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:) Inc, Airbnb Inc, Expedia (NASDAQ) Group Inc. and Tripadvisor Inc. were both down 0.6% and 1.8%.
