Magnitude 4.5 earthquake strikes Permian Basin

(Reuters) – On Monday, a earthquake measuring magnitude 4.5 was recorded near Stanton, West Texas. This was reported by the US Geological Survey.

USGS stated that the earthquake struck at depths of 7.8 km (4.8 miles).

It occurred in the Permian basin, which is home to the biggest shale oil field and gas fields. According to MRT News, this is the second-strongest earthquake that West Texas has seen in 10 years.

Following a string of small earthquakes, Texas Railroad Commission, the state’s regulator of energy, has set limits for the amount of wastewater that oil and gas producers can inject underground.
