WARSAW, (Reuters) – A Polish senator believes that his cell phone was hacked with sophisticated spyware created by Israel’s NSO Group. He accused prosecutors not of taking action on the matter and viewed it as a hot potato to pass between offices.

The Associated Press (AP), reported that University of Toronto researchers found out that senator Krzysztof Beerza was hacked in 2019 with Pegasus software. This happened during an election when he was the candidate of the largest opposing party.

AP reports that Ewa Worzosek was a critic of the government’s judicial system and Roman Giertych, a lawyer representing opposition figures, were both found by the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto.

The hacking was committed by all three parties, Law and Justice of Poland (PiS), the ruling nationalist party.

Stanislaw Zayn, the spokesperson of the Polish security forces, stated that he was not able to comment on Polish security agencies’ methods, or whether any individuals have been investigated.

He stated previously that any suggestion suggesting that Polish forces were involved in domestic political fights was false.

PiS spokeswoman neoma declined to elaborate. “The security service have made comments on this subject,” she stated.

Brejza stated that “the prosecutor’s office is not doing anything, it is paralysed,” and added that he and his spouse had notified prosecutors in September about potential phone hacking.

Brejza stated that the prosecutors are playing for their time. They don’t want to or refuse to open an investigation. Instead, they treat it like a hot potato best to be thrown elsewhere.

According to him, the complaint was passed among the various prosecutors in the country but had no effect.

The National Prosecutors’ Office and the prosecutor’s office in Ostrow Wielkopolski did not respond immediately to Reuters’ request for comment.

Critics of the government claim that corruption has led to politicization in the office of the prosecutor. The European Union claims that Zbigniew Ziobro is the creator of the judicial reforms which undermine independence in courts. He also acts as the prosecutor general.

NSO Group claims it creates technology to be used by government and law enforcement agencies in combating crime and terrorism. There are safeguards that prevent any misuse.

Researchers in digital rights claim that Pegasus was used by several countries to spy on the civil society.
